Abstract

Inequality of opportunity for women persists in many aspects of society, including the workplace, economics, and health. In response to the vulnerability of this group, the United Nations has included various goals within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda, with the aim of helping to reduce the gender gap in the countries that are part of it. In Mexico, despite the work done to achieve progress in equal opportunities between men and women, women continue to face barriers that limit their full participation in the economy. In this context, analyzing women's expectations regarding inequality of opportunity is essential for the success of the SDGs; on the contrary, ignoring these expectations not only perpetuates social injustice, but also limits economic and social potential. The objective of this qualitative research was to understand the expectations and needs of women, which must be considered when implementing actions by the state to reduce gender inequality and promote sustainable and equitable economic development. Through the application of a questionnaire to 150 people who consider themselves women in an age range of 18 to 45 years about their expectations. The results show worrying indicators for young women in the area to access job opportunities and above all security that allow them development and economic self-sufficiency, and thereby reach a social and sustainable economic level for this part of Mexico. It is concluded that it is necessary to follow up and analyze the changes that are made in subsequent years to identify if the gap between equal rights between men and women has been reduced, by considering the expectations of women, particularly young women, within public policies, laws, regulations, social programs, etc. that allow substantive equality.
